Where To Install Curtain Rods – One of the things I often see when clients ask me to help them design and decorate their home is the wrong way to hang curtains. I have to be honest, I hung the curtains wrong too! I remember hanging the curtain rod just above the window sill and hanging the curtains just enough to cover the window. That was until I started reading and studying design techniques that make a huge difference in the look and feel of an interior, and curtains are one of them. It’s so simple, but it makes your space bigger and more luxurious. Here are some tips to help you hang your curtains the right way.
Instead of hanging the curtain on the windowsill. Hang them at least 6 inches above the windowsill. If the ceiling is low, go as high or as close to the ceiling as possible. High-hanging curtains draw the eye upwards and make the ceiling appear higher.

Did you know that you can also mount the curtain on the ceiling with these ceiling brackets?!! This is an excellent choice for low ceilings.

Not only do you want to hang your curtains high, but you also want to make sure they are wide. When buying a curtain rod, make sure you buy one that is wider than the width of your window. A general rule of thumb is that the curtain rod should be at least 8″-12″ longer. This allows you to extend the bar at least 4″ to 6″ on both sides (you can go up to 10″ on both sides if you have room).
To make your curtains look fuller and more luxurious, don’t skimp on the fabric! A general rule of thumb is that the curtain panel should be 1.5 to 2 times the width of the window.
Consider the type of fabric you want. If the fabric is light, you should use extra wide panels or double the panels on each side. If your curtains are thick, you can use less fabric as long as the width of the panel is at least 1.5 times the width of the window. These heavy synthetic linen curtain panels are a great budget option for a luxurious look for less. I’ve had them for years and the fabric is nice and heavy.
If you were shopping for long jeans and let’s say you were tall, would you buy short jeans? And we’re not talking about the capri look, remember we’re looking for long jeans. Imagine those jeans. It will look kind of funny, won’t it? Well, so will your curtains if they are too short.

Kiss: when the curtain barely touches the floor. This length can be difficult to achieve as you need very precise measurements from the top of the curtains to the floor.
Floating light: The shade sits less than an inch above the floor. This will give a nice and clean look. This is a great option for those of you who don’t want the curtain to touch the floor. Just make sure the curtain hangs no more than an inch from the floor.
Pytt (pictured below) – The curtain stretches down and over the floor, and the fabric “beats”. This look is more dramatic and can be difficult to keep clean.
Even if you have very small windows and want curtains, I recommend getting them down to the floor. For example, our basement, which we remodeled ourselves, has a typical small basement window. For now, I only have blinds, but if I were to buy curtains, I would go for long floor-length curtains.

If your curtains are just a little short and a little more than half an inch above the floor, these curtain rings can help.
If your curtains are too long and you don’t want to look like a puddle, you don’t have to worry about having to sew the edge of the curtains. You can simply use HeatnBond instead. I have this product and have used it before. Honestly, it’s surprising how easy it is. All you have to do is measure and iron. It works great!
If you use press studs, you can also fold the top of the curtain inwards and attach the ring to the new hem. A white circle with a black border around a chevron pointing up. It means “click here to return to the top of the page”.

When it comes to window treatments, well-chosen and well-hung shades are multi-purpose: they control light and heat from sunlight, provide privacy, and contribute to the overall look of a room.
“The first thing we always look at when choosing a window treatment is to think about function,” says Virginia Toledo, co-owner and creative director of Toledo Geller Interiors. “Do we need privacy in this room? Do we need protection from the sun?” Answering these questions will determine how heavy your curtains should be and whether you should consider features such as privacy liners or colorfast fabrics.
How To Hang Curtains Without A Rod
Design and suspension are equally important factors. Fabric pattern and color are important—sometimes the curtains are “the hero” of the room, Toledo says, and sometimes they’re “just another character in the piece”—and the right hanging adds to the look, too.
Hanging at the wrong height can make a room seem shorter than it actually is, while incorrect anchoring can cause curtain rods to bend over time. But when hung correctly, curtains can make rooms look taller and will stay secure for years.
Note: Curtains and drapes are technically different. Although both are pairs of fabric panels hung on a rod, curtains are always lined, while curtains are not. However, most people, including professionals, use these terms interchangeably.
The bars should usually extend about 6 inches behind the window on both sides. The rod should always be wider than the window, because you don’t want the curtains, when fully open, to cover the window. “You want to keep as much natural light as possible,” says Toledo, with curtains covering only the windowsills on the left and right.

The width of the curtains depends on their purpose. Note that a curtain is called a panel.
As for stationary curtains, for the modern style preferred by the Toledo design studio, choose a width of 1½. For a more traditional look, choose 2 widths. “Using a double full on a narrow window,” says Toledo, “your curtains would look ‘heavy’ on either side of the window, which is a more traditional look.”
Quick tip: If you’re using ready-made curtains, which tend to be less wide, Toledo recommends buying two pairs of curtains for one window. “Put two curtains on the left and two on the right and now they look a little fuller,” he says.
To install the bars, “If you have a standard 8- or 9-foot ceiling, 3 to 6 inches above the window frame is appropriate,” says Toledo. This rule can be difficult with shorter ceilings or crown mouldings. “Get as close to the roof or crown as possible,” advises Toledo. “When you mount the rods closer to the ceiling, you create the illusion of a higher room. [It’s like] a short person wearing jeans with a high waist and a long opening, right? You create the illusion of a longer leg, but a leg remains the same length.”

Similarly, for higher ceilings, you can place a rod more than 6 inches above the window sill to elongate the room.
Ideally, says Toledo, the curtains should “kiss the floor, just touch the floor lightly.” Curtains that are too long collect on the floor, are a tripping hazard and difficult to clean up and make the room look shorter than it is, as do curtains that are too short.
To determine the length of the curtain, measure the distance from the top of the rod to the floor. Then adjust this measurement depending on how the curtain is hung. For example, curtains with rod pockets, which have a pocket sewn in for the rod to go through, may need to add extra inches. Curtains hung on curtain rings must subtract inches to account for the length added by the rings.
Quick tip: If you can’t find ready-made curtains in the right length, start with curtains that are too long, go through the hanging process, mark where the curtains should end, and take them to your local tailor or dry cleaner. wings
