The front door is the main entrance to your home, so you want it to stand out and look inviting. client Richard decided to transform his porch and its columns himself and chose our folded vanilla bean for the job. Richard framed his front door with our stone veneer and used our vanilla paneling around the base of the posts and on the porch.

Engineered stone is not a new concept, but for years the industry has been flooded with inferior products that lack the authentic look of natural stone and the durability to survive in any environment. Not only were the panels more authentic than expected, but the smooth installation process of these stone veneer panels was a pleasant surprise for our clients. Depending on the size of the project, even a project like Richard’s can be completed in a weekend!

Do you think of them simply as structural elements or do you view them as a design element? At Brick&batten we believe that porch columns can be both! There are so many different sizes, materials, colors and placement options to consider when incorporating columns into your home’s exterior design. Below we’ve rounded up some of our favorite modern ideas to get you thinking about new ways to implement columns.

Do you feel like the appearance of your home is outdated? If you’re looking to freshen up your decor, Brick & Batten has you covered! Our team of experienced designers will work with you to understand your taste and create a virtual exterior design that you can use as a guide to bring your home to life.

In the example above, the porch columns in the previous photo are white and narrow. This owner wanted to create a new look that would transform the traditional style of the home into a modern farmhouse. The black and white color palette serves this aesthetic, while the wood accents liven things up. Our designers used wooden columns under a black steel canopy, creating a striking contrast. This simple update highlights the home’s other charming wood features: the front door, mailbox front, and gate leading to the backyard.

Adding Cedar Pillars To Our Dream House

This house has two floors or colossal columns at the front. These were classic round columns without flutes with Ionic capitals. To freshen up the design and enhance curb appeal, our designers updated the columns to a square shape with Tuscan capitals. Wrapping and painting the columns to match the shutters gives this stately home a fresh look that honors its history but brings it into this century. The faux stone at the base of the porch columns creates a contrast in the structure that works beautifully.

When it comes to engineered stone, the exterior design possibilities are virtually endless. One of our favorite ways to use this material is to make porch columns. The large columns shown in the previous example are one of the most impressive features of the house. Wrapping them in faux stone takes the design to the next level. The stone veneer continues around the base of the house and completes the façade. Finally, this new texture layer blends well with the existing darker stone on the walkway and stairs.

Columns should not be an independent design element. The wood columns in this home serve as part of the exposed wood frame of the covered porch. This bold aesthetic makes the covered porch feel more connected to the yard, even if it is screened off.

Our designers used black accents to contrast the light gray exterior of this modern home. The porch’s black steel columns are paired with other dark design elements, including the garage door, planters, trim and chimney cap. Our designers often work with wood columns, but steel is another trendy material we’re happy to recommend.

Exterior Pvc Products

The large wooden columns of this modern farmhouse create a focal point at the entrance and set the tone for the entire exterior design style. They also emphasize the symmetry of the facade. We love using columns to make a statement – this home is a prime example of that.

There are so many interesting elements in this new exterior design of this home that make it dynamic—and completely different from the previous photo. One of the biggest improvements is a new deck and patio on the lower level. The iron columns have a concrete base and create a stylish industrial look. This is one of our favorite examples of how columns can become a powerful design.
