Clothes To Wear In Europe – We’re home and the laundry is (mostly) done. So I wanted to revamp and revise my travel wardrobe while it was still fresh in my mind. Above, some of my fall travel outfits from Europe using what I packed. (Yem colorful scarf bought in Paris, here is a similar style.)

I made some of the above changes at the last minute based on the weather forecast. I took off two brown sweaters, jeans and rain boots. Instead of a long coat, I took a short, light down jacket. I added a leopard cashmere/silk long scarf.

Glad I made those changes! It rained very little so no shoes were needed, the short down jacket was very warm. I’ve worn almost everything at least once and the pieces are easy to mix and match with different outfits.

I did some shopping on the way and wore a few pieces during the trip which was a nice refresher. But even without them, I was always comfortable, appropriately dressed, and able to be versatile with what I packed. Overall, I would rate this wardrobe 8.5/10.

To solve this, I like to wear lighter clothes at the beginning of the day so that I can change easily in the evening. Because they take up so much space around you, backpacks are not only easy to reach in pick pockets and very difficult to carry on public transport, they are also very versatile for most activities. For example, you don’t easily carry a suitcase to semi-formal or most informal restaurants in big cities.

Instead, I prefer a thin crossbody bag that I can easily carry hands-free and hold in front of me while exploring. Here’s a tip I learned while living in NYC that keeps my stuff safe while holding it together more than a classic backpack.

Another tip is to avoid carrying a water bottle or coffee mug, as it is common to carry a drink outside of the US, making it easier to get out.

If you’re not used to walking a lot and you walk a lot on vacation, your feet might hurt anyway. That said, wearing comfortable shoes can give you a fighting chance.

Comfortable shoes will not only make your entire trip more pleasant, but will also be more practical for the often steep, old streets and stairs that are common in old cities.

For the same reason, high heels and high cobbled streets and old cities don’t mix all over Europe, so I’d recommend going flat during the day and then switching to heels for dinner if you’re a bit short on time Walking, driving or maybe taking an Uber.

If you want some height during the day, try a pair of wedge or ankle boots with a small, boxy heel. I love them because they protect your feet, are incredibly comfortable and go with everything.

Another style of shoe that I avoid bringing on vacation is flip flops. In my experience, these classic pool shoes are too casual for most places, so like the other tips I’ve shared, you risk going to restaurants if you wear them. Instead, I like to pack a pair of sleek sandals that look more sophisticated than flip flops but are just as comfortable—if not more so.

While traveling you will face unpleasant weather like rain. Often, when a storm hits and you’re unprepared, you’re forced to take a flimsy plastic windbreaker to the side of the street.

These cheap toppers are a dead giveaway that you’re not local, so if I’m traveling in the rainy season I like to bring something that can withstand the rain.

Last but not least, if you plan to visit old churches when visiting new cities (especially in Europe), it is important to remember the dress code.

Typically, many of these churches have a dress code that prohibits bare shoulders and sometimes even knees. To make sure you can see as many of these icons as you want, I recommend wearing 1 or 2 long hems and a comfortable covering like a sweater or scarf.
